Top Destinations in Cambodia

Cambodia offers an abundance of breathtaking attractions, culture, and adventure, making a visit to the Kingdom of Wonder an unforgettable experience. The country has something to offer every tourist, from tropical beaches to lush forests, ancient ruins to bustling cities.

Phnom Penh

There is something magical about seeing a city from above. Thanks to Rosewood Phnom Penh, located in the capital, this can now be experienced. The Sora Skybar on the 37th floor of the 39-story Vattanac Capital Tower offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the emerging capital, especially at sunset.

Siem Reap

Siem Reap, famous for Angkor Wat, is a must-visit destination. While the city center is popular with tourists, it’s easy to escape to the peaceful surroundings around the city, which is well worth it after visiting the temples.

Phnom Kulen National Park is home to waterfalls, ancient sacred sites, wildlife, and stunning views. Banteay Srei offers various nature experiences, and there are tours in Siem Reap that take tourists to rural life.

Kampot

Kampot is quickly gaining popularity due to its relaxed charm. Despite the emergence of trendy places like wine bars and boutiques, the city maintains its laid-back atmosphere. With high-quality dining options, Kampot is a must-visit destination.

Koh Rong Samloem

Koh Rong Samloem is a paradise island with secluded beaches, white sand, and crystal-clear waters. For a relaxing sunset with a drink, this is the ideal destination.

Kep

Kep is known for its peace and quiet, perfect for those seeking a relaxed experience. With options like Rabbit Island, horseback riding, and beach trips, there’s plenty to do. The best time to visit is between May and October due to the rainy weather.

To travel from Phnom Penh to Kep, you can choose between a 4-hour bus journey or a 3-4 hour taxi ride, at rates ranging from $7 to $40. The bus is the most affordable option, and the best time to visit is during the rainy season between May and October.

Important Traffic Rules

In March 2020, the Cambodian government revised traffic laws, with updated penalties for traffic violations. Driving in Cambodia requires caution, given the hazards for both pedestrians and drivers. This guide provides more insight into Cambodian traffic rules.

A Cambodian driver’s license is required for travelers who plan to drive in Cambodia after six months. Although smaller motorcycles do not require a license by law, it is still recommended to check with your travel insurance.

Driving Requirements

International travelers may need to take a driving test or show a valid driver’s license from their home country. In addition to a driver’s license, it’s also recommended to have an Permís de conduir internacional for a long stay.

Drivers over 65 years old must have a medical examination and eye test while driving. To obtain a Cambodian driver’s license, international drivers must provide certain documents, including a copy of their passport and driver’s license.

Speed Limits

Like in other countries, specific speed limits apply on various roads in Cambodia. Here are the limits that must be adhered to:

In cities:

  • Maximum of 30 km/h for motorcycles and tricycles
  • Maximum of 40 km/h for all cars

Outside cities:

  • Maximum of 90 km/h for all vehicles
  • For trucks heavier than 3.5 tons, it’s 70 km/h
  • Trailers have a limit of 60 km/h

Driving Under the Influence and Distractions

Drunk drivers face a fine of 250,000-800,000 Riel ($60-200) and cannot continue driving if they exceed the legal limit. There is zero tolerance for alcohol use while driving and a fine for mobile use without hands-free.

A 0.02% blood alcohol concentration is set as the limit, and violations are punished. Safe driving and avoiding distractions are essential for a secure ride in Cambodia.
