If your driver’s license is not in English or the Latin alphabet, you must provide an English translation of your driver’s license. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is therefore necessary to drive in North Macedonia. Car rental companies also often ask for your IDP so you can rent a car from them.
With an American driver’s license, you are allowed to drive in Macedonia for one year. Possession of an IDP is not required if you have an American driver’s license, but it is advisable to obtain one if you are going to drive abroad to avoid potential issues.
You can obtain an IDP online from organizations such as the International Travel Permits. All you need to do is fill out the online application form, upload your photos and a digital copy of your valid driver’s license, and make the payment using a credit card or other available payment options.

Tourists traveling with a rental car in North Macedonia must always carry their travel documents. Important documents such as your valid driver’s license, car rental insurance, and an International Driving Permit (IDP) must be readily available at all times. Since Macedonia borders Bulgaria, Serbia, Kosovo, Greece, and Albania, an IDP can be useful if you plan on taking a short road trip and exploring these countries. Aside from meeting the minimum age requirements, it is also crucial to have relevant documents with you.
The legislation regarding driving under the influence in North Macedonia shows little tolerance for drunk drivers. The legal limit is 0.5, which is relatively low. Even a small amount of alcohol can quickly push you over the limit, leading offenders to face license revocation and possibly even imprisonment. As a tourist, if you exceed the legal limit, your International Driving Permit for North Macedonia can be handy as proof of identification, but you are still subject to national laws.
Respect the speed limits while driving in North Macedonia to avoid fines or, worse, getting involved in an accident. The applicable speed limits in North Macedonia are as follows:
Wearing a seat belt is mandatory while driving in North Macedonia. The front passenger also needs to wear a seat belt to enhance safety. When traveling with young children, they should be placed in a child car seat.
