How can I apply for an International Driving Permit in Oman?

Obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP) is a fairly straightforward process. However, before you can drive internationally, you need to have your valid driver’s license, passport photo, and a means of payment, such as a credit card.

Once you have these documents, you can click the button to apply for an IDP. Fill in all the required information as stated on your valid driver’s license. Include a copy of your valid license, a passport photo, and your payment information.

After submitting your application, you can wait for your IDP to be delivered and receive email updates about it. If you wish to extend your stay as a tourist, you must apply for an Oman driver’s license.

Top Destinations in Oman

Oman offers various architectural highlights, ranging from modern buildings to historical monuments, mosques, and impressive mountain ranges. In addition to the vast desert landscapes, the country also promotes ecotourism with a reserve dedicated to sea turtles in the Indian Ocean. Traverse a relaxed community in Oman, where you can stay in traditional stone houses.

Sultan Qaboos Mosque

Your exploration in Oman usually begins in Muscat, the capital where most travelers land. Before heading to quieter areas, you can admire the beautiful mosques in Muscat. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque welcomes non-Muslims and houses the world’s largest chandelier, an impressive Persian carpet, and other exquisite interior details.

The mosque can accommodate about 20,000 people and is often visited in the morning, from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. Note that the mosque is likely closed on Fridays due to the weekly Friday prayers. Before leaving Muscat, you can also admire the Royal Palace of Qasr Al Alam, although it is not accessible to visitors. However, the nearby port offers a stunning view of the palace and the adjacent twin forts of Al Jalali and Al Mirani, which serve as a museum and are open to the public.

Wadi Bani Khalid

Located in the eastern part of Oman, Wadi Bani Khalid is a true oasis with emerald green and turquoise waters that will surely captivate travelers. This elongated gorge channels mountain water to the lower areas and is considered a surprising retreat in the desert. You can choose from various pools of different sizes, but be cautious of the slippery rocks as you move between the different pools.

The best time to visit Wadi Bani Khalid is between January and March, when the average minimum temperature is around 8 degrees Celsius and can rise to 30 degrees Celsius. It is advisable to go on sunny days so you can fully experience the beautiful colors of the water.

Bahla

Bahla, located in the northern part of Oman, is known for its unique blend of architecture and pottery traditions. The famous Bahla Fort, dating back to the 13th century and largely made of mud brick, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to the fort, Bahla City offers a rich collection of local pottery, although traditional production methods are increasingly being displaced by modern technology.

Visiting Bahla between the winter months of September and March is recommended, although you can explore this historic town in the summer if you wish.

Sharqiya Sands

Visiting the desert is an essential experience when traveling to the Middle East. Discover authentic Omani life through dune bashing during the day, admiring the sunset in the golden sand dunes, and camping at night under a sky sprinkled with thousands of stars.

The winter months from October to March are ideal for exploring the Sharqiya Sands, as the weather is pleasantly cool. In the summer months, desert temperatures can rise to 50 degrees Celsius, making conditions challenging.

Hajar Mountains

The Hajar Mountains, also known as the Al-Hajar Mountains, are one of Oman’s most impressive tourist attractions and the highest mountain range on the Eastern Arabian Peninsula. This mountainous area provides access to breathtaking locations such as Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest peak, Jebel Akhdar, the fertile valley of Oman, and Wadi Ghul, the ‘Grand Canyon’ of Arabia.

Misfat al Abriyeen

Escape the city hustle and enjoy the serene atmosphere in the mountain village of Misfat al Abriyeen, located on the southwestern flank of the Al Hajr Mountains. This traditional Omani village is characterized by houses and buildings made of mud and stone, with unique orange and brown hues.

You can safely park your car and explore the village on foot, enjoying the narrow streets and lush greenery. Spend the night and taste a traditional Omani homemade meal, complete with local coffee. The summer months from April to September offer the ideal conditions to experience the beauty of this mountain village.

Musandam Fjords

Experience a range of water sports activities in the Musandam Fjords, located in the northernmost part of Oman and surrounded by the United Arab Emirates. This remote region is home to mountain villages and coastal communities and is a paradise for nature lovers.

Diving, taking a traditional Omani dhow cruise to spot dolphins, and admiring intriguing rock formations are among the activities you can engage in here. Visit this region between October and January when the temperature is pleasant. It is also possible to explore Musandam in the summer months, but be prepared for the heat.

Main Traffic Rules

Omani authorities place a high value on enforcing traffic rules, with stricter measures due to the number of traffic accidents in recent years. As a tourist renting a car in Oman, it is crucial to be familiar with local driving regulations.

Respect Speed Limits

Due to the high number of traffic accidents in Oman, adhering to speed limits is essential. Tourists are encouraged to drive defensively and be aware of their surroundings. Speed limits on highways are set at 120 km/h, on rural roads at 90 km/h, and in urban areas, it varies from 40-80 km/h.

Use Seat Belts and Ensure Child Safety

Wearing seat belts for all occupants is mandatory and strictly enforced by the police. For children under four years old, a car seat is required; you can bring one or add it to your car rental. Children under twelve years old must always wear a seat belt in the back seat.

Pay Attention to Traffic Signs while Driving in Oman

Traffic signs serve as a guide during your drive to various destinations. Pay close attention to the signs to prevent unnecessary traffic accidents. Most signs are similar to those in other countries, and if necessary, they are translated into English to inform road users.

Watch out for Crossing Animals

Be alert for camels and goats that may unexpectedly cross the road in Oman, especially on rural roads with less traffic. Always keep your attention on the road to prevent accidents.
