Do I need an International Driving Permit in Albania?

A British driving license is valid in Albania, even without an IDP (International Driving Permit), so if you have a British license, you do not need an IDP. If this is not the case, obtaining an IDP is a requirement if you plan to drive in Albania.

What are the requirements for an International Driving Permit in Albania?

To apply for an International Driving Permit in Albania, you must provide documents such as a passport photo, signature, copy of your driver’s license (front and back), and a method of payment. If you have any questions about your International Driving Permit in Albania and do not have internet access, you can use the contact number of your IDP provider. In case of loss of your International Driving Permit in Albania, you must immediately call the contact number of your provider to report it missing so that they can replace it.

Main traffic rules in Albania

Driving in Albania can be challenging if you are not extra careful, as many roads within and outside cities are under repair. Understanding some key traffic rules can help prevent accidents and fines after you have adapted to Albania’s traffic rules. It is essential to be aware of the requirements for driving in the country to avoid fines or imprisonment for illegal driving behavior.

Driving under the influence law

Authorities in Albania enforce a zero-tolerance policy towards driving under the influence. The maximum allowable amount of alcohol in the blood is very low (about 10 mg in 100 ml of blood or 0.01%), equivalent to less than a can of beer or a glass of wine. If you suspect that you have exceeded the alcohol limit, you must take a breathalyzer test. Refusal automatically results in a fine of approximately 5,000 to 20,000 Albanian Lek or ALL ($40 – $190), and suspension of all driving privileges.

Speed limit law

Albania has four different speed limits, indicated in kilometers alongside the road. In cities, the maximum speed is 40 km/h, outside cities 80 km/h, on highways 90 km/h, and on expressways 110 km/h. Be alert, as speed cameras are widespread and violations can result in fines of 500 – 10,000 ALL ($5 – $100). Always drive within the posted speed limits.

Minimum driving age

The minimum age to drive a car in Albania is 18 years for Albanian drivers. However, for foreign drivers, the minimum age to rent a vehicle is 21 years. Drivers younger than this age are not allowed to rent a car, regardless of their driving experience.

Driving on the right-hand side

Both Albanian and foreign drivers must drive on the right-hand side of the road. It is also mandatory to wear a seatbelt.

Use of mobile phones while driving

Contrary to many other countries where driving with distractions is not allowed, in Albania, it is permitted to drive with a mobile phone, provided that a hands-free device is used while driving. However, the use of handheld devices is strictly prohibited.

Top destinations in Albania

Despite years of isolation, Albania is gradually becoming a popular tourist destination, with its historical sites, beautiful landscapes, and welcoming population offering travelers a great time exploring the country.

Tirana

Tirana, the capital, has a vibrant character and showcases buildings from the Ottoman and Italian era reflecting the country’s rich history. The city hosts various museums and art galleries, including the BUNK’ART, a former government bunker now transformed into an art gallery.
