Main traffic rules in Gibraltar

The best way to navigate Gibraltar is to follow the applicable traffic rules with your own vehicle. Driving the scenic coastal roads of Gibraltar requires compliance with traffic regulations. In addition to making sure you have a valid international driver’s license according to local laws, there are other important aspects of the traffic rules in Gibraltar that you should be aware of:

Driving under the age of 18 is not permitted

You must be at least 18 years old to be eligible for a full driver’s license in Gibraltar. However, people as young as 17 can apply for a provisional driver’s license to legally practice driving. Persons with only a provisional license must be accompanied by an adult with a valid driver’s license. Before driving, your vehicle must first be inspected at the vehicle licensing authority.

This rule also applies to tourists. Despite having a valid driver’s license from your home country, you are not allowed to drive in Gibraltar. Since obtaining an international driver’s license is also not allowed, it is advisable to respect the rules in force.

Always drive within the speed limit

It is essential to drive within established speed limits in Gibraltar because of the varied terrain structure. Although the roads are well paved, they contain many curves and steep slopes. For your safety, take extra care on winding roads with elevation changes.

Gibraltar is a small area of fast travel, so generally there is a universal speed limit. If there are no speed signs, maintain a speed of 30 mph – 80 mph.

Avoid alcohol and driving

Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs reduces your responsiveness and is a leading cause of traffic accidents worldwide. This also applies to Gibraltar; therefore, strict maximum alcohol limits are enforced:

  • Alcohol content in breath – 35 micrograms per 100 ml of breath
  • Blood alcohol concentration – 80 milligrams per 100 ml of blood 9 hours earlier
