More about New Caledonia

Is an International Driving Permit needed in New Caledonia?

Persons without a French driver’s license must have an International Driving Permit (IDP) when in New Caledonia. When driving abroad, the driver must at all times carry an IDP and a valid local driver’s license. Your IDP is not valid on its own.

Drivers operating a vehicle without the correct legal documents risk facing a high fine. If you plan to rent a car, you may be required to present your IDP to the car rental company.

But what is an IDP actually?

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is a document approved by the United Nations under the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. It serves to translate your existing driver’s license into 12 of the most widely spoken languages globally. As a tourist planning to drive in the country, you must have an IDP along with your valid national driver’s license.

How can you obtain an IDP?

Simply follow these steps:

  • Click on the blue button ‘Start My Application’ at any part of the page.
  • Read the instructions and ensure your driver’s license and payment details are ready.
  • Fill in all the details stated on your driver’s license.
  • Attach a copy of your valid driver’s license along with your passport photo.
  • Enter your payment information to pay for your International Driving Permit.

Embarking on a road trip abroad is exhilarating. Our IDP is utilized in over 165 countries worldwide, including:

  • Australia
  • Japan
  • New Zealand
  • Namibia
  • Iceland
  • Botswana
  • Jamaica
  • Ukraine
  • South Africa
  • Congo
  • Lesotho
  • Macau
  • Panama
