If you are a tourist looking to explore new places in Turkmenistan, it is essential to be familiar with the basic traffic rules of the country. Some interesting locations are situated in areas where the roads are narrow and bumpy. Therefore, always stay alert while driving. Keep these rules in mind so you can explore Turkmenistan worry-free.
Authorities in Turkmenistan absolutely do not tolerate driving under the influence, including driving with alcohol in your system. If you plan to drink alcohol with friends during a camping trip or meals, make sure not to drive the day or night before. Even if you think you won’t get caught in remote areas of Turkmenistan, never take the risk of driving drunk. Be aware that you may expect traffic fines or penalties if caught by the authorities.
It is crucial to respect speed limits to prevent accidents. In urban areas like Ashgabat, you are allowed to drive up to 60 km/h. For destinations in the countryside of Turkmenistan, it is advised to maintain a speed of 90 km/h. Do not drive too fast in these areas so you can slow down in time if camels or other animals cross the road. On highways, you can accelerate, but keep the speed at 110 km/h.
Not wearing a seatbelt is one of the main reasons for accidents on Turkmen roads. No matter how experienced you are in your own country, driving on foreign roads can always be different. Do not wait for the authorities or local people to correct you for not wearing your seatbelt. Make sure to wear the seatbelt and use car seats for toddlers.
