Top Destinations in Rwanda

Rwanda, located in East-Central Africa, has Kigali as its capital. This country is home to a variety of endangered species and stunning nature. Thanks to its picturesque landscape, Rwanda has earned the nickname “Land of a Thousand Hills”. Rwanda also has access to Lake Kivu, one of the ‘Great Lakes of Africa’. A majestic country easily reachable by car.

Volcanoes National Park

The Volcanoes National Park is undoubtedly the most famous tourist attraction in all of Rwanda. Surrounded by lush jungle and the opportunity to witness the marvelous mountain gorillas, it offers an unforgettable experience. The park offers various activities and other sites to explore. This nature reserve may be one of the most photogenic of all nature parks in Rwanda. Taking photos of the gorillas and the surroundings is encouraged, provided that the rules are followed.

A notable aspect is that all revenue collected from tourists contributes to conservation efforts to preserve these majestic gorillas. Once threatened by poachers and hunters, authorities have done an excellent job ensuring that the park is a safe haven for the gorillas and other rare primates. Some former poachers have now become guides in the park to protect the animals. Meeting these gentle giants is a modest experience.

The ideal time to visit Volcanoes National Park is during Rwanda’s dry seasons, June to September and December to February. During these periods, temperatures in the mountains are more pleasant and it will be less strenuous for gorilla trekking or walking in other parts of the park. March to May are less suitable months for a park visit, due to rainfall, significantly complicating trekking and hiking.

Lake Kivu

The most luxurious hotels in Rwanda are located along Lake Kivu. Many offer stunning views of the tranquil water. Lounge under a parasol on the beach with a snack and drink for a relaxing afternoon. Enjoy various water activities, such as windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, or participate in a boat tour.

Boat trips on Lake Kivu will take you to various islands in the lake, each with unique attractions, such as an island dedicated to coffee and macadamia cultivation or an island with the best swimming spot. On the mainland, there are several hot springs to relax after a day full of activities. Enjoy a massage at the hot springs and let all the tension melt away.

Lake Kivu is a vast body of water flowing through both Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is common to encounter tourists from Congo and other regions. The best months to visit Lake Kivu are June and July, the dry months when days are cooler and nights are milder.

Main Driving Rules in Rwanda

Traffic safety is paramount in Rwanda; police checkpoints and traffic officers with speed guns are common. Adhere to Rwandan driving regulations, as vehicles here drive on the right side. The police emphasize safe driving behavior; therefore, always ensure the road is clear before overtaking another vehicle or entering a roundabout.

Driving under the Influence is Prohibited

Drunk drivers are severely punished in Rwanda. A blood alcohol level of 0.8 or higher can result in 24 hours of imprisonment, along with a fine of RWF 150,000 (US$ 150). Even if you have consumed a few drinks and people know you are going to drive, this is negatively viewed. Driving even with a blood alcohol level below 0.8 is disapproved. If you drink, make sure to have a designated driver with you holding an International Driving Permit.

Police conduct random alcohol checks. This includes conducting a breathalyzer test to check your sobriety and verify if you are within the permitted limits. Refusal to undergo the test results in a fine of RWF 150,000 (US$ 150), equivalent to driving under the influence. If you possess a Rwandan driver’s license, driving under the influence may lead to the revocation of your driving privileges.

Adhere to Speed Limits

Kigali maintains lower speed limits compared to most cities due to prior car accidents. The limits are strictly enforced; violation can lead to a fine of RWF 50,000 (US$ 50). Some speed restrictions in Kigali are not permanently set; the limits may vary depending on the time of day, and police officers adjust the signs accordingly. These adjustments are intended to reduce traffic congestion and ensure pedestrian safety.

Some individuals play with speed limits thinking a $50 fine is manageable. In Rwanda, however, the police may escalate the fine based on the number of violations. For additional infringements, such as speeding without seat belts, the fine can be increased. The more violations, the higher the fine can go, up to nine times the standard amount per offense. Fines up to $500 are not uncommon.

Always Keep to the Right

As Rwanda, especially the capital, mostly has two-lane roads, we advise drivers to stay to the right and use the left lane only for overtaking. This prevents blockages and aggressive driving behavior during passing maneuvers. It also facilitates navigating the various roundabouts in the city.

Always Carry Your Documents

While driving, always have your documents with you. This includes your native driver’s license, insurance papers, car rental agreement, and your International Driving Permit. The police enforce this strictly and may ask for your International Driving Permit for identity verification.
