Can foreigners drive in Kyrgyzstan?

Foreigners are allowed to drive in any foreign country with a rental car from local rental companies, provided they have a valid driver’s license. Additionally, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is also recommended.

Key Driving Rules in Kyrgyzstan

No alcohol behind the wheel

Driving under the influence of alcohol is strictly prohibited in Kyrgyzstan, with a legal limit of 0% alcohol in the blood. Offenders risk a fine of 17,500 Kyrgyz som or $200. The country does not tolerate driving under the influence, with immediate imprisonment even for a small amount of alcohol consumption while driving.

No overtaking

Overtaking is not allowed when pedestrians are crossing or within 100 meters of a railway crossing in Kyrgyzstan. Due to most two-lane roads in the country, overtaking is limited. Avoid overtaking at regulated intersections and secondary roads without access to oncoming lanes.

Respect speed limits

Speed limits are enforced on various roads in Kyrgyzstan, with specific maximum speeds. It is important to respect these limits, especially on poorly lit roads, to avoid fines:
