Known as the modern Pompeii of the Caribbean, Montserrat is a symbol of resilience. Despite multiple devastating volcanic eruptions, the island has managed to preserve its beauty uniquely. Montserrat offers extensive black sand beaches, lush rainforests, mountainous landscapes, and diverse wildlife. For those who enjoy exploring the pristine landscapes of a tranquil island, Montserrat is a destination not to be missed.
The Soufrière Hills Volcano symbolizes both destruction and survival on the island. After the 1995 eruption marked by numerous lava domes, the southern part of Montserrat became uninhabitable and buried the former capital Plymouth. Today, Soufrière Hills is a top attraction for tourists on the island. Despite the tragedy of the eruption, it is evidence of the island’s strength and resilience.
The volcano falls within the exclusion zone and was closed for both local residents and tourists for a long time. Group tours are now allowed, accompanied by professional guides and local authorities. A visit to parts of the buried city of Plymouth and a close-up view of the impressive 1,440-meter high volcano are recommended. Guides also share stories of the catastrophic event. The ideal time for a visit is during the dry season between June and December.
Woodlands Beach is known for its long coastline with glistening black sand beaches. Located opposite Lake St. Lawrence, Woodlands Beach offers a serene environment to relax amidst beautiful waters. Tourists can use the spacious camping sites and picnic areas for large events and gatherings, accommodating up to 2000 people. The beach is perfect for group retreats and family outings.
The Caribbean Sea at Woodlands Beach is perfect for adventurous tourists wanting to dive and brave the high waves. Additionally, the beach is a nesting site for turtles, where visitors can witness adorable turtle hatchlings emerging. With beautiful sunsets, this part of the island is also ideal for peaceful relaxation. The best time to brave the waves at Woodlands Beach is between June and August.
If you prefer not to see Soufrière Hills up close in the exclusion zone, a visit to the Montserrat Volcano Observatory is recommended. Group tours can be arranged with friends and family, hiring a local guide if needed. From this location, you have a safe distant view of the volcano and the exclusion zone without going to Plymouth.
The observatory offers an informative 20-minute video showing how the catastrophic eruption affected the island and its residents. You can also meet scientists monitoring the seismic activity on the island. The team also holds free lectures on the volcanoes of Montserrat. The observatory is open year-round, except on weekends.
The Jack Boy Hill Viewing Facility offers visitors a private space and stunning views of the Caribbean Sea and the island. The picnic area is open to everyone. Enjoy the colorful flowers in the garden and use telescopes and fixed binoculars to admire the ruins of Plymouth, Soufrière Hills Volcano, and the Caribbean Sea.
If you’re hungry after your exploration, the Jack Boy Hill Viewing Facility has a barbecue area. Bring your cooking utensils and ingredients to enjoy a meal amidst enchanting views. Explore the surrounding rainforest with a short walk on the mini trail to discover more. Visit the facility between June and December.
After experiencing Montserrat’s black sand beaches, visit the island’s only white sand beach at Rendezvous Bay. It can be accessed via a steep 1.13-kilometer pathway from Little Bay. For those who prefer not to walk, kayak rental options are available in Little Bay for bay access.
Rendezvous Bay is surrounded by tall cliffs where various birds reside. Relax on the white sandy beach and enjoy sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling without paying an entrance fee. Prepare your own food and drinks as there are no amenities nearby. Avoid visiting between July and November due to the hurricane season.
At the Runaway Ghauts, you can witness rainwater from the mountains flowing into the sea, one of nature’s wonders. Ghauts are steep ravines that drain rainwater. The location is named after a story of a confrontation between the English and French, where the French fled. Located in the north of Salem.
Tourists are allowed to drink spring water as legend says those who drink from the ghauts will return to Montserrat. Reach the site by a short 10-minute walk on the Runaway Ghaut Trail. The area offers beautiful tropical trees and lush vegetation for nature lovers. Visitors appreciate the walk, especially between June and December.
In contrast to the tragic landscape of the exclusion zone in the south of Montserrat, Centre Hills are characterized by lush tropical rainforests and rich biodiversity. Here you will find 34 stunning species of land birds and migratory birds, including Montserrat’s national bird, the Oriole, and other rarities like the forest thrush and mangrove cuckoo.
Centre Hills is considered one of the most diverse bird areas in the Caribbean. Besides tropical birds, the area hosts various reptiles, amphibians, and bats. Located at 700 meters above sea level, it offers beautiful views of forests and lush valleys. Visit Centre Hills between June and August and drive carefully to prevent accidents.
When visiting a dream destination, it is essential to respect the traffic rules of that country. Responsible travelers should be aware of the general driving norms and the specific policies of the country they are visiting. For example, it is crucial to drive on the left side of the road and adhere to speed limits to prevent traffic accidents. Montserrat’s traffic regulations are similar to those of other countries, so compliance contributes to a safe and enjoyable stay.
In Montserrat, driving with a blood alcohol content of more than 0.8% is prohibited for both local residents and tourists. Given Montserrat’s rugged terrains, driving under the influence is strongly discouraged. If you are involved in an accident, you must report to the police station immediately. Offenders will receive a criminal record and may face a mandatory driving ban of at least 12 months, as well as fines, community service, and compensation, depending on the severity of the offense.
A temporary Montserrat driver’s license can be obtained from the immigration department or the Royal Montserrat Police Service, where taking a driving test may be optional. When applying, you need to present your existing driver’s license. The temporary Montserrat driver’s license is valid for up to three months.
The maximum speed limit in Montserrat is intentionally lower than in urban areas to prevent fatal accidents on the winding roads. The main roads in Montserrat have a maximum speed limit of 64 km/h, while in the city of Plymouth, the limit is 32 km/h. Adhering to the speed limits gives you the opportunity to navigate steep slopes and sharp turns on the roads smoothly.
