Key Traffic Rules in the Marshall Islands

A smooth and safe journey in the Marshall Islands begins with abiding by the traffic rules. The traffic rules in the Marshall Islands are similar to those in many other countries, making them easier to follow. Make sure to be informed about the essential traffic rules in the Marshall Islands before hitting the road to ensure everyone’s safety.

Driving under the influence is punishable by law.

While there is no specific legal limit for blood alcohol concentration in the Marshall Islands, driving under the influence laws apply, similar to other countries. Globally, driving under the influence is a significant cause of traffic accidents. It is essential to always drive sober, as driving under the influence is common during weekends and holidays.

Avoid driving at night.

With only one main road on the Majuro Atoll, getting lost is nearly impossible. Despite the concrete paving, there are few traffic signs and a lack of traffic lights along the streets. Animals like pigs, chickens, and dogs freely roam, along with pedestrians.

Due to limited street lighting, driving at night is considered dangerous. If not necessary, it is recommended to avoid nighttime driving to prevent accidents.

Adhere to the speed limit.

There is a national speed limit in the Marshall Islands. In urban areas, a maximum speed of 40 kilometers per hour should be observed. It is important to respect these limits due to free-roaming animals on the roads.

Some roads do not have specific speed limits, but it is advised to always drive slowly due to the condition of the roads. Enforcement of the speed limit is mainly done manually by police officers in the Marshall Islands.
