What is an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) serves as a necessary document for driving in countries where solely possessing a UK license isn’t sufficient. These countries encompass popular destinations such as the USA, Turkey, Brazil, and United Arab Emirates, among others.
Do I Require an IDP?
An IDP is either mandatory or strongly recommended in over 140 countries worldwide. The necessity of an IDP varies based on the country you intend to drive in. It’s essential to check the specific requirements of the destination country. Moreover, if you plan to travel through multiple countries, you may need various types of IDPs.
How Can I Apply?
Starting April 1, 2024, International Driving Permits (IDPs), essential for UK license holders driving in select overseas destinations, won’t be accessible at Post Offices. Instead, starting next month, IDPs can be acquired from participating stores offering PayPoint services.
PayPoint services are accessible in over 28,000 shops nationwide, including local convenience stores. With extended operating hours compared to traditional Post Offices, obtaining IDPs exclusively from PayPoint outlets may enhance accessibility. An IDP is a vintage-style paper document containing translations of UK driving licenses. It’s either required or recommended for driving in 140+ countries worldwide, including popular destinations like Canada, Australia, Morocco, New Zealand, and the USA.
However, if you possess a UK-issued photocard driving license, an IDP isn’t necessary for driving in the EU, Switzerland, Iceland, or Liechtenstein. The UK government provides a country-specific list where an IDP is needed here.
When purchasing an IDP, ensure you have your current photocard driving license. For holders of paper driving licenses, a passport photo and passport for ID verification are required.
